Thumbs down to Fountains of Wayne for the resentment they displayed in having to play their well-known song, "Stacy's Mom." The group performed at the Kellogg Centennial Global Arts Festival in downtown Evanston on Saturday and delayed the single until the very end, knowing full well that it drew in most of their crowd.
Lead singer Chris Collingwood seemed resentful to be playing it at all, saying that he "was sick of playing it in 2004." That's like The Verve whining about playing "Bittersweet Symphony" or Plain White T's rolling their eyes when the audience requests "Hey There Delilah." Hate to break it to you, Fountains of Wayne, but you're a one hit wonder. You are Stacy's Mom. It's about time you own it and play it with pride.
Thumbs down to the soulless thief who stole a puppy from its home in Evanston. The 4-month-old female poodle-schnauzer was minding its own poodle-schnauzer business when it was nabbed right from its front yard. The same week, there were 13 car break-ins along Sherman Avenue and the culprits escaped with stolen global positioning systems, cell phones, a radar detector, iPods and more.
When stories like this emerge on the Evanston Police Blotter, it makes us wonder what kind of a community we live in. Car theft, though unfortunate, is not unheard of. Puppy theft, on the other hand - that's just cruel.
Thumbs up to Mo Greene for gracing our predominately white upper-middle-class student body with a level of street cred we've never before experienced. The Northwestern alum's new song, "Go U (NU Anthem)" has 2,000 hits on YouTube and promises to incite epic amounts of school spirit. Before you know it, fans will be rapping in the stands with Mo as "Willy's on the sideline leading the chants and Mo's in da back, man, leading da anthem!"
The song could also change our vernacular with great new quotes like, "N Dubbs do da damn thing" and, "If the D catchya with CJ Bacher" (a catchy but unfortunate mispronunciation of Bachér's name). Finally, it could inspire students and professors to conclude their conversations and lectures with a long list of shout-outs, just like Mo. So, in the spirit of the NU Anthem, we'd like to give shout outs to Mary Desler, Jerry Springer, Al Gore, Aladdin, Richard Simmons and Dennis Rodman. AAAAAAAEEEEEEEEH!
Thumbs down to locals who didn't buy a ticket for Saturday's NU football game against Michigan State. Who likes seeing silver seat backs instead of people at Ryan Field? There is no excuse for why tickets are still available for Saturday's showdown on Central Street.
Students are doing their part, based on the large number of tailgates planned for the late 2:45 p.m. start. Spending $50 on a ticket ain't the best strategy when the economy's strugglin' but is that really an unfair price to watch two Big Ten football programs, who are a combined 10-1 this season, duke it out? Come on guys, what would Mo say?
Thumbs up to Evanston's new, level-headed City Clerk. A coworker has called Clerk Rodney Greene calm and collected, the "polar opposite" of outgoing clerk Mary Morris. Morris bailed with the Early Retirement Initiative in May, leaving the office with little direction for the future. Apparently, Greene's experience as a wedding singer, second-degree black belt and ordained minister were exactly what was needed for a smooth transition.
