John Pont, former Northwestern football coach and director of athletics, died Tuesday. He was 80. Though he remains the last coach to guide Indiana's football team to a Rose Bowl or a Big Ten title, the best he managed during his tenure with the Cats from 1973 to 1977 was a 4-7 record. After the 1977 season, Pont took the director of athletics post, which he held until 1980. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. in Oxford, Ohio, at the Smith and Ogle Funeral Home. A burial mass will be held in Oxford on Monday at 10 a.m. Pont will be buried in the Miami University section of the Oxford Cemetery. All events are open to the public.
