Welcome to The Daily's 2008 Spring Dining Guide
We're constantly searching for a deeper connection to the food we eat: who makes it, where it comes from and why we love it. We relish the opportunity to meet the executive chef, to have a conversation with our waiter or waitress and to read about the humble origins of our pesto chicken sandwich.…

From breakfast to bar, Bat 17 aims to fill every nicheSpecialty sandwiches, free coffee and tea, beer towers draw patrons to Benson Avenue pub and deli
You can call Bat 17 a sandwich place if you'd like. Just don't tell that to Jim Pomerantz.
Pomerantz, one of the managing partners of the restaurant that calls itself "a distinctive breakfast/lunch/dinner/deli/pub" would tell you Bat 17 is all that and more.…

It's all in the family at downtown Evanston bakeryFather-son duo runs Bennison's, Davis Street establishment known for cupcakes, other baked goods
Situated on the corner of Maple and Davis Street, Bennison's Bakery is reminiscent of another era. An illuminated vertical sign blinks on and off, and customers bustle out of the shop with white paper bags laden with treats still warm from the oven.
In fact, the bakery has been in Evanston for nearly 70 years and continues to attract a wide range of Evanston residents, from curious newcomers to dedicated customers.…

Breaking out of the spring dining slump
Maybe it's just that springtime slump, but for whatever reason, I've recently been yearning for fresh flavors to mix up the day-to-day dining monotony.
Nothing against my sorority's chef, Hector, of course. The kitchen is just two floors down and turns out a fair number of quality creations.…

Young chef brings four-star skills to 'Quince'
For years, a small, upscale restaurant housed in a little inn off Davis Street has been the home to some of Chicago's finest culinary talents. Today, the tradition continues as a new generation aims to establish its own take on fine dining.
A short walk from Evanston's downtown, The Homestead, 1625 Hinman Ave.…

Late-night trips for hot dogs a 'Wild' time now pastWild Dogz no longer open late, but owner still prides himself on a close relationship with customers
It's Fall Quarter, late one Thursday night - or, rather, early Friday morning - and a pack of obnoxiously loud Northwestern students are running through downtown Evanston.
They are not going to a bar or craving greasy fast food; they're led by Medill sophomore Sam Allard and are headed to Wild Dogz, 1625 Chicago Ave.…

Entrepreneur retires to restaurant near Davis Metra
Eleven years ago, Peter Mills stumbled upon the space just below the Davis Street Metra station in Evanston. Garbage was piled to the ceiling, pipes were burst and the graffitti-covered walls had fallen in.
He said he thought it would be a "fantastic space" for a restaurant.…

Got Java? A look at local coffeehouses
With so many beaneries crowding the Evanston streets, a Northwestern student in need of a caffeine fix could be intimidated when deciding where to get their java. Some might assume that coffee is just coffee, and whichever shop is closest is always the best choice.…

A culinary home away from home
There are not many things that I miss about home. Sure, my Evanston apartment is not nearly as tidy as my house, I don't have the luxury of driving around in my adorable Beetle and warmth is something I no longer take for granted. But all in all, the thing I miss the most while at Northwestern is a home-cooked meal - simmering Italian sauces, meat that falls off the bone with the slight prod of a fork and crispy apple pie with a gooey filling and cold ice cream melting over the edges.…

Two Noyes Street eateries bring students north to eatAl's Deli, Rollin' to Go both long-established restaurants that draw students with their sandwiches
Two Noyes Street neighbors are small, more than 40 years old and still luring students. The pair has become household names and has far surpassed other, more youthful competition.
The restaurants, Al's Deli, 914 Noyes St., and Rollin' To Go, 910 Noyes St.…

Now serving: burritos and wings at your doorNU Student Holdings to operate delivery service
In the height of Winter Quarter's discontent, an order of spicy wings from Buffalo Joe's, 812 Clark St., can seem a lifetime away.
By next year's first snow, however, that bucket of wings might only be a phone call away.
Planned for this fall, Wildcat Express Delivery will offer students the option to have food delivered from Evanston restaurants that don't offer delivery services.…
