Letters: The Weekly should stop offending student theater

From the way that The Daily writes about some of the theatre productions I've been involved with so far during my time at Northwestern, you'd think that Medill is training its students for careers as beat writers for Us Weekly and Perez Hilton.

First, there was the "article" written on JTE's production of Hair, an article that focused primarily on the brief nudity and ignored the greater message of the show. Most of the author's questions focused on the nudity, and her "maturity" was made clear from the final line of that article, "Hope they shaved."

Then, in this week's "Anticipation Index," The Weekly editors found it appropriate to bash a show none of them have seen, Jones' production of Assassins. One of the editors obviously has an issue with the brilliantly-written show, calling it "annoying" based on a previous production, but to call the performers of the show a "before-their-prime undercast"? The issues with that statement are many. The primary issue being the fact that whoever wrote that has not even seen the show.

But also, as far as I know, this is still a school and we are all students who wish to learn more about our respective subjects and grow into who we are as artists and as human beings. So should all students refrain from participating in activities where they still have room to grow? I mean, it's quite clear that The Weekly editors have a way to go before they become professional-quality journalists. Why should we waste our time reading "before-their-prime" writers? And I shouldn't even mention the fact that right under the blurb bashing Assassins, the editors make fun of the Spring 5K Run/Walk presented by NU Special Olympics, calling it "intolerable." Classy.
