In an election where candidates are striving to look like ASG outsiders, Student Services Vice Presidential candidate Nate Perkins does not shy away from the word "experience." As a current member of the Student Services Committee, Perkins is no stranger to the inner workings of ASG. But Perkins makes it clear that his experience does not mean he shares the same viewpoints as the current ASG.
Perkins has already worked on sustainability initiatives as a committee member. He pulled in outside groups like Students for Environmental and Ecological Development to work with him on his plans for better recycling on campus. His ability to adapt and work around the flaws of the ASG system make him the best candidate for SSVP.
When Perkins worked on initiatives for campus-wide wireless Internet, he realized that going through the administration would not accomplish anything. Instead he turned to Undergraduate Budget Priority Committee because of their unique funding abilities. He has the insight to realize what is feasible and turn elsewhere when he cannot secure the appropriate resources.
Perkins also has plans for a diversity fair next fall. His experience has proved beneficial and he has a firm grasp on the realities and possibilities of his job as SSVP.
Perkins' opponent, Harry Vijayaraghavan, is running on an outsider platform. Unfortunately, he is such an outsider that it's unlikely he understands the SSVP role well enough to implement real change.
