SportsNight takes home top prize for newscasts
Northwestern News Network's SportsNight, a weekly broadcast that highlights news about Wildcat athletics and the Big Ten conference, took home the award for Best Newscast at the College Television Awards Gala on March 15.
SportsNight beat out two other newscasts in the category, both from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, to win first place.
"My adrenaline was so high that I can't even remember what went on," said Medill junior Ryan Dietz, an executive producer on the show . "This just kind of shows that sports is news."
SportsNight is student-run with support from the Medill School of Journalism.
"The news and production values on SportsNight are of the highest caliber, and it was terrific to see those values recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences," said Prof. Larry Stuelpnagel, SportsNight's faculty adviser.
The SportsNight team walked away with a cash prize of $2,000, which they hope to invest in improving the show. "We want to make the show more aesthetically pleasing to the viewer," Dietz said.
