Although Sally Ewing, as the new undergraduate dean of the School of Communication, is responsible for students and faculty in Northwestern's second most populous school most students have no idea who she is.

Despite having been on the campus for more than two months, Ewing is concerned that many people do not know a change in deans took place.

According to Communication students, Ewing's concern is justified, as many of them expressed surprise over the news of a new dean. An e-mail was recently sent to all members of the School of Communication announcing Ewing's arrival.

Ewing said she is encouraged by the healthy rapport between Communication students and their academic advisors.

"I've just been very impressed by how much support students have through this office," she said.

Ewing said she was enamored with the general spirit of the school when she assumed her post. She said she saw the opportunity to foster that spirit and build upon the school's already solid reputation.

However, she said it is too early to tell if there is anything specific in the school she would like to change or improve.

"The school really is very oriented towards providing a lot of student support and that is something that I really also want to pursue," she said. "I imagine there's always room for improvement in any organization."
