Thumbs down to increased tuition costs despite our paunch, possibly ponderous, endowment. As expected, tuition, room and board costs will be increasing next year - this time, by 4.8 percent. Total costs will jump from $45,840 to $48,050, with more than $1,000 hike in tuition alone.

Over the past year, NU's funding has grown significantly. Some of this money will be used to finance the increase in undergraduate financial aid. However, the current policy change has apportioned these funds to only the poorest of NU students, those with family incomes less than $55,000.

While NU is making commendable efforts to provide more scholarship funds, the reality of the situation remains unchanged: Attending NU is expensive enough, and just because many students come from families that can afford it on paper, it does not mean that they are bottomless pockets of wealth.

Thumbs up to the men's and women's basketball teams, for their first Big Ten victories of the season. The women started it off with a 70-58 win over Penn State on Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. In her last home game at NU, senior Nadia Bibbs led the Cats with 19 points and four assists, along with pulling down eight rebounds. NU, which was in the midst of a 16-game losing streak, had not tasted victory since Dec. 17.

The men followed suit on Tuesday, handing Michigan a 62-60 loss and snapping a regular-season conference losing streak that reached all the way back to last Feb. 10 - a span of 19 games. Junior guard Craig Moore paced the team with 25 points and a school-record eight 3-pointers, the last one coming in the final minute to put the Cats on top for good. Sophomore forward Kevin Coble added 16 points, three nights after electrifying Welsh-Ryan with 37 points in an 85-82 loss to Indiana. The drought is over. But how long will the rain last?

Thumbs down to people getting stabbed
anywhere in the world. Especially in Evanston and especially during the day. The stabbing occurred at the Davis Street El station, a central and well-frequented part of downtown Evanston.
