College Democrats to bring Rod Blagojevich to campus

Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich will speak to the Northwestern community at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2 at Cahn Auditorium. The event, titled "Ethics in Politics: An evening with Former Governor Rod Blagojevich," is sponsored by College Democrats.

"A conversation about ethics and politics is important to have," said Dan Rockoff, vice president of programming for College Democrats. "There isn't a better person out there to discuss this than former Governor Rod Blagojevich."

Because four out of the last eight Illinois governors before Gov. Pat Quinn have been indicted, corruption was a key issue during the Illinois primary elections, Rockoff said.

Blagojevich (WCAS '79) will have 15 minutes to plead his case before an NU faculty panel can begin asking questions, Rockoff said. The panel will include Law Professor Tonja Jacobi, Political Science Professor Donald Gordon and Medill Professor Donna Leff, the Communication senior said.

"The majority of the event will be an interplay between the faculty panel and the former governor," he said.

After the faculty panel has finished, students will have the opportunity to ask questions, Rockoff said.

"Our belief is that students at Northwestern are interested in debating this issue," he said. "They will be interested to see this kind of dialogue."

Derrick Wu said he was excited when he received a Facebook invite to the event.

"It is absolutely a great idea to bring a prominent, controversial figure," the Bienen and Weinberg sophomore said.

The event will be effective because it gives students an opportunity to experience a newsworthy event, rather than read about it, Wu said.

Although College Democrats is not sure when tickets will be available, the Norris University Center Box Office will begin distributing them later this week, Rockoff said. There will be about 1,000 free tickets for the NU community, he said.

To Sam:
Your student activities fee is paying for it. So thank ASG for allocating hundreds of thousands of dollars to a group that consists of three active members (as reported to me by my roommate who attended a meeting or two not too long ago). Who says ASG is broken?

As an NU alum and a former member of college democrats I'm disgusted that Blago would be invited to speak anywhere on NU's campus. I understand that for NU students it is supposed to be a platform to launch an ethics conversation, but for Blago it's another publicity stunt. There is absolutely no reason his presence is necessary to promote a conversation on his poor ethics. The most ethical thing we could all do is legally punish him and forget his existence.

ehh as long as my tuition isn't paying for his appearance (it isn't, is it???), i'm OK with it.

This is a horrible idea. Why don't you just invite Ahmadinejad next. That is the only example of a WORSE speaker to come to a university that I could think of. College Dems, please get a reality check.

Apparently Northwesterners have not yet seen any of Milorads' previous interviews...he's not about to offer up anything new and he dances around questions he can legally answer but refuses to. His "shouting from the roof top" , and "playing all the tapes" has run it's couse, it's obvious no judge would allow 500 hours of recordings, (over 12 weeks or 3 months) putting his trial at about 7 months. What kind of jury do you think he'll get? Who can afford to put their lives on hold for 7 or 8 months? When the press went before Judge Zagel and tried to get the recordings released, Milorad and his attorney's were no where in sight. If in fact Milorad was concerned at all with having the recordings heard, he would have shown up for court that day and fought along side the press.
A question Milorad should be able to answer (because P.F. has not brought charges in the case) IS...Why did he make a deal with Tony Rezko his partner's Aiham Alsammarae and Daniel T. Frawley of Companion Security to bring 150 unvetted Iraqi militants' here to a military base in Savanna Illinois to train to use AK-47's??? What was he thinking??? How could this venture possibly benefit the people of Illinois??? Jobs, I don't think so! Did it ever occur to him to vet the people who were going to sponsor this bid??? Alsammarae was convicted in Iraq for stealing over $650 million dollars from the U.S., escaped back to the U.S "Chicago style"...His conviction in Iraq was lifted by Prime Minister Maliki stating ,"no Minister could be investigated without their permission".
Daniel T. Frawley has millions of dollars in judgements against him from non-payment to assault and stalking. He was fired from the Chicago police dept. for being an extreme racist and attacks on fellow officiers. During the time of their government bid Daniel T. Frawley had no office, no home not even a fax machine. The 52 year old was living with his sister Maureen Frawley. Was it a coinsidence when her home was robbed of 3 guns and over $100,000 in cash just days before Jill Morganthaler (head of home land security in Illinois) sent an email to o.k. the military base in Savanna??? I don't think soooo. This wasn't just a case of "pay to play" it was treason.

I bet Blago has some juicy political understories that dont make the news I am a democrat tried and true but I also think for myself and I think dems would be wise to look at the mistakes of others and ask some real questions about the President makin his way through the Chi Town pol machine. Because the day Obama leaves the party what will it look it like, this question needs to be asked because we can ride Obama all the time we might have to move without him one day

As a graduate now living out-of-state, I have to say it's a shame I'm not there to see this spectacle but I'm glad I'm not still paying those ASG fees. I look forward to coverage of the protests. Oh wait. That probably won't happen...

I'm glad my ASG student activity is helping pay the appearance fee of an alleged felon...

College Dems obviously didn't choose to bring him because they see him as a role model. It stimulates discussion, which is what the point of bringing speakers to campus should be. Hopefully the College Republicans will bring Ted Haggard next, huzzah!

I really hope the school contracted the right to give ole' Blago a haircut. gawd it's awful.

Otherwise it's hard to imagine the college dems inviting a worse person. "We're democrats, and this is how we govern!"

If irony were strawberries, we'd all be drinking a lot of smoothies right now.

Ingenious stuff; I can't wait till I get out of the hole and you can host me!

(democratic mothers probably won't get the joke as they're too busy supporting murdering civilians in two wars)

Blagojevich is a great role model - as was George Ryan. In the 1930's - Nazi germany put up posters of Al Capone as their folk hero - now - we have modern folk heros - not sure for whom, though.

He is hardly the person to talk about ethics - unless it's from the criminal perspective. The College Democrats should find a better role model to speak about this topic. What are they thinking?

As a NU parent I am encouraged to see opportunities for open dialogue. How will leaders of tomorrow learn to be solving problems and creating solutions if they do not understand what does not work in an ethical platform.
