Digital book downloads offered by the Evanston Public Library have increased 29 percent in the last year, said Lesley Williams, head of adult services at the library.
Williams said residents download around 700 to 800 e-books every month.
For three years, the library has been part of My Media Mall, a library consortium that uses the digital distributor OverDrive. Residents need a library card to access e-books on OverDrive and can read with computers, tablet computers, iPhones, iPods, Barnes & Noble's Nook, Kobo, Sony e-readers and most Android or Blackberry devices. The Kindle is not compatible because it does not use the same file standard, called EPUB.
