Evanston watering hole Bill’s Blues is threatened, but not yet closed forever, said Bill Gilmore, the bar’s owner.

The business, at 1029 Davis St., owes sales taxes to the state of Illinois, he said. Under the state’s orders, the city suspended Bill’s Blues’ liquor license Monday.

“I could be open without alcohol, but there would be no point,” Gilmore said.

Gilmore said he has been trying to work out the issue with the state in time to be open for this weekend, as he still has musical acts booked.

He said he is currently trying to drum up enough money to keep the bar open by seeking loans from “friends, relatives and drinking buddies.” He said a more official loan is unlikely.
“A bank is not going to loan me money,” Gilmore said.

In last year’s recession, frequenting bars and hearing live music became extravagances people began to cut, he said.

“The first thing they tell you is stop going out,” Gilmore said.
Jose Dutriz, whose band, Lolita, played several times at Bill’s Blues, said the bar is a good option for student performers.

“I think it’s a pretty good venue, for Evanston,” the Medill senior said. “You can tell your friends to go, and it’s not very far and you’re also going to have some people who aren’t from Northwestern.”

Dutriz said he would be sorry to see the bar go.

“It’s a nice little place that I would want to check out again if I heard there was a good band playing there,” he said.

William Gilmore, aka Bill, seems like a nice enough guy, but a sparkling impresario he is not. His priorities can be a little suspect as well. I once saw Bill oblige a live band to wait for nearly an hour while he finished watching a movie on the bar's HD television--and he was the only one watching the movie.

I'm a Tuesday night jammer that has loved playing at Bill's Blues bar. Tom C. has made me feel like I'm Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton combined. It's truly a shame the bar is closing. It would have been nice, in the four years I've been going, if Bill Gilmore once said hello.

As a Tuesday night jammer I would be heartbroken to see Bill's Blues go under. It’s a wonderful venue, a real treasure! and its loss would be a loss not just to the North Side but to all Chicago. Unfortunately, the steady descent of Bill's been obvious for over a year, and a bit of a vicious cycle, for as the variety and quality of offerings have been whittled away (think beverages on tap, varieties of bottled brews, soap in the men’s washroom), customers have fewer reasons to return.

I've played there, I've watched many acts there, I've made many friends there. It would be a sad day should Bills close down. Live music venues are disappearing across the landscape, and with them goes an opportunity for listeners to catch the potential big stars of the future. I too am familiar with "local resident" complaints. There have been complaints of loud music and the police have arrived only to find no band is playing. I was there when it happened. Hmmmmm, food for thought there.

I'm willing to bet "Local Resident:" lives in that condo building two streets or so south of Davis St. There's nothing to buffer the sound between the front of Bill's Blues and their windows. But I'm pretty damn sure those went up AFTER Bill's Blues opened so they have no room to complain.

Great news. I couldn't be more elated upon hearing about the potential demise Bill's blues bar. I live in close proximity of this bar and the noise that emanates from this bar(loud music) and it's patrons(who loiter about and crank their high powered car stereos) is a complete nuisance in terms of a lack of respect to their neighbors. Imagine a tailgate party outside of your window that starts at midnight and doesn't stop until 3am throughout the week.I love the blues but not bill's blues bar. Good riddance

My boyfriend and I spent Valentine's Day at Bill's Blues. It would be truly tragic to see it close. It's a total icon in our relationship...we go there for our anniversary, for each other's birthdays! I'm very sad to hear this.

This isn't the first time Bill's has been on the verge of closing.
He needs to get his act together and stop counting on others to bail him out or just close.
There's another music venue in town so competition for customers is fierce.

What is it about bar owners that makes them think that they can get away with skimming? I remember one wonderful dive that went under when the owner took a trip to Vegas to try to win enough money to cover the 2 years worth of taxes that he had been withholding from employees' wages but forgetting to send to the IRS.
