Car strikes 18-year-old on Sheridan

Regardless of who should be paying attention to what they're doing (both people should), it's important to realize that if you don't look before you cross the street and a car hits you, you, the pedestrian, will be the more injured party almost always. I think a lot of NU students assume cars can see them and will stop, which isn't always the case on Sheridan. It's connected to Lake Shore Drive in the city, which is one of the fastest roads (speed limits up to 50mph and people usually drive much faster). It's not an excuse for drivers to not watch where they're going, but it is something to think about when you're going to jay walk. Additionally, I know last night it probably wasn't fully dark yet, but in general when it's not daylight hours if you're wearing a dark coat/sweatshirt and pants (even jeans) and you're crossing the street, it's VERY hard for drivers to see you. I almost never take Sheridan Road by campus at night anymore because I'm terrified I'll hit someone, even though I'm looking. I'm not blaming anyone on either side, but I think everyone should be more aware.

If you're speeding down the road illegally, then look for pedestrians crossing.
