Actress Regina Taylor speaks to NU students

The School of Communication brought actress, director and writer Regina Taylor to Northwestern on Wednesday night at Annie May Swift.

My enjoyment of and ability to hear Ms. Taylor's comments were both negatively impacted by the clacking of key's on the laptop of the Daily's reporter composing her article during the event, as well as by the ringing of her cell phone on two occasions (and her answering thereof on the first occasion) despite the specific request to turn all phones off at the beginning.

When I asked her to please stop typing as it was a distraction and annoyance for everyone (people 20 feet away were looking over to see what all the noise was), she responded snarkily that "It's my job."

What would have prevented her from recording the event or taking notes with pen and paper and composing her article later, besides sheer laziness? Is her desire to compose the article documenting the event in real-time really a higher value than the experience of those present at the event?

Is it general practice for Daily reporters to disregard all standards of polite audience behavior out of a self-important conviction that their reporting is more important than that which they are reporting upon? And if so, why is the article, apparently composed before the event even ended, not even posted yet?
