Not all Star Wars happen in galaxies far, far away.
A summit at Alice Millar Chapel on Sunday will explore the negative impacts of a national missile defense system and the proliferation of nuclear weapons in space.
Bernice Barta, member of the board of the North Suburban Peace Initiative, said national missile defense represents a threat to the balance of peace in international affairs and can lead to nuclear weapons in space.
"We hope to alert people to the fact that there is a possibility for the militarization of space," Barta said. "It's very important that we inform people."
The summit, entitled "Star Wars: The Nuclear Menace, Episode 2000," will consist of a three-member panel discussion of experts in the field of nuclear proliferation.
Panelists include Bruce Gagnon, coordinator of the Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space; Gerald E. Marsh, a physicist and defense analyst at Argonne National Laboratories; and Mike Moore, editor of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
The North Suburban Peace Initiative is sponsoring the event, which is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan Road. The event is free and open to the public.
