Evanston firefighters are investigating a Sunday night fire that severely burned a 21-year-old man and caused $25,000 damage to a Darrow Avenue townhouse.
Maurice Lewis, 21, suffered internal burns and a second-degree burn on his arm in the fire at 1510 Darrow Ave., said Division Chief Alan Berkowsky of the Evanston fire department. Lewis was listed in serious condition at Evanston Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters have been unable to ask Lewis for details about the fire because of the internal burns, which were caused by inhaling hot gases, Berkowsky said.
Firefighters arrived at the Darrow Avenue townhouse at about 6:10 p.m., Berkowsky said, and saw flames bursting from the front windows of one of the townhouse units.
Firefighters entered through the back door of the residence and extinguished the fire after about 20 minutes, Berkowsky said.
Lewis had been visiting his father, Maurice Mathis, who lived in the townhouse, Berkowsky said.
Fire officials were still investigating the incident Wednesday afternoon.
Berkowsky said fire department officials cannot complete the investigation until they talk to Lewis.
