After scandal, be glad for university's patience

People supporting the frats in the recent Delta Upsilon debacle need to shut up. Seriously. Be glad that the parties every week - doubtless full of underage drinking - are consistently overlooked. Be glad that all the people who these parties distract from studying don't complain. Be glad that the university - which really gains very little by your presence - continues to tolerate it.

If someone gave you $1,000, would you complain like this that they wouldn't give you another hundred? You're asking the university to stick their neck way out. You're asking them to stand quietly by while news crews investigate what these midget wrestlers were doing. That's an awful lot to ask from the people who choose not to screw you 99 times out of 100.

They don't need any more justification for kicking fraternities off, just a shortage of tolerance. Try not to make them lose their patience.

Apathy in mail room unacceptable and illegal

As a resident of one of the smaller dorms on campus, I realize that it would be impractical to have a mail room in every dorm and therefore do not mind walking over to 1835 Hinman to pick up packages.

However, when I receive a package notice, I frequently find myself standing face to face with the closed door of the mail room during open hours.

This past week, I noticed that I had not received mail for quite a while. When I learned that an important package from my parents had not arrived on time, I went to the mail room to inquire about the recent lack of mail.

On my third try, I finally found the mail room open. When I told the mail room employee that I had not received a package notice yet, her response was, "Oh yeah, we haven't delivered to your dorm for a while."

A few days later, I returned to the mail room and found a group of students searching through a big bin of letters. I was informed that if I wanted my mail I would have to sort through the bin as well. I am not, nor were these other students, mail room employees, and as far as I know, tampering with mail is a felony.

The 1835 Hinman mail room allowed students to commit a federal offense because they had neglected to do their job for almost a week. Among the mail in this bin were paychecks, bills and an absentee ballot. My own item contained money that could have easily been stolen by the illegally rummaging students.

I also do not think the owner of the absentee ballot would have been happy if someone had committed voter fraud at his expense.

The apathy displayed by the mail room employees is not only inconsiderate, it is in violation of the law and completely unacceptable.
