I commend The Daily for finally showcasing our fine Latina talent, especially Ms. Staine who started the first and only Latina/o magazine, ¡Ahora!

To preface, I wear multiple sombreros. I'm president of Alianza - The Hispanic/Latino Student Alliance and an active member of the multicultural community. I'm Ms. Staine's best friend. I'm a 1.5 generation Peruvian immigrant, and I state this so that Daniela Garcia doesn't do so on my behalf.

I'm loving Taco Gate 2008. It is, indeed, Hispanic Heritage Celebration, and what better way to rejoice than by discussing Latin American, Caribbean, Spanish and the diasporas' diverse gastronomy. Ms. Staine's column was perhaps inspired by Alianza's social activism this summer.

Luke Adams obviously doesn't know Ms. Staine, for she is not a pretentious, over-privileged NU student, but is as "hood" as they come ("Tacos not the only thing Evanston lacks," Sept 25). Though not a Medill student, I am still capable of reading her piece as satirical. I know how to contextualize texts, thank you Northwestern, so I don't understand how Garcia refused to do so ("Tacos column may perpetuate stereotypes," Sept 26).

An avid reader of The Daily, I'm glad for the new writers. Garcia's PLAY article was so last year; Ms. Staine's creation is our current avant-garde. If the haters are doing their job, that means Ms. Staine and The Daily are certainly doing something right. I'm all about building community, and I'm thoroughly disappointed at Garcia for attempting to bring down one of her own: a Medill Latina, a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and supposed "amiga."

For authentic tacos and other deliciousness, come to Festival LatiNU at 6 p.m. Friday, October 3 in the Louis Room (Norris) - and no need for mommy and daddy to take out extra life insurance policies, Adams.

ALDO GALLARDO Weinberg senior President, Alianza
