Worse than Northwestern's 45-10 loss to Ohio State last Saturday was the disrespect Ohioans paid to Evanston off the field without repercussions from campus police or NU athletics.

Leading up to the match-up against Ohio, many fans seemed to forget they had ever left Columbus. Ohio fans left Evanston littered with beer cans after a day of drunken fights and blatant disregard for open-container laws. They brought alcohol into Ryan Field - even into the student section - without police or security doing anything to stop them. Drinking continued well after the game in on-campus parking lots.

Despite the obvious violations, NUPD and NU Athletics actively chose not to enforce rules and laws that students and locals must follow.

How is this possible in a city where students can't even party in their front lawn without a police car rolling up to question them? On any other Saturday, gameday or otherwise, NU administrators wouldn't tolerate drinking on the street and boarding shuttles with open bottles.

If NU athletics isn't going to loosen the rules for everyone, they should at least see that NUPD enforces them equally.

Ohio State did give us our first sold-out game of the season and stricter rules may hurt ticket sales future ticket sales. But NU shouldn't cater to visiting schools when the real attendance problem has been local fans. Drunk Ohioans shouldn't ruin the game for the NU fans who pay for tickets.

Administrators decided long ago that Big Ten football wouldn't equate to open partying like our state school brethren. If NUPD doesn't tolerate NU students fighting or falling over drunk in the stands, OSU fans should be held to the same standard.
