Tuesday's Daily article regarding the same-sex marriage bans ("NU students react to success of same-sex marriage bans" Nov. 11) quoted a senior, Nathaniel Zebrowski, who supported the Prop 8. "(Gays') lives can pretty much be the same as they were 10 days ago," he said. That's precisely the tragedy. The gay community was hoping that their rights would improve. Like all "marriage protection" supporters, Zebrowski fails to recognize the fact that legal rights of gay couples are grossly inadequate. Homosexuals don't feel like they've lost rights. It's just that they've consistently been denied equality.
Zebrowski and those who share his opinion claim they are not making a statement about homosexuality as a lifestyle. This baffles me. If they don't criticize gay lifestyles, why is this an issue of the ballot? Should Zebrowski choose to enter a heterosexual marriage, no one will have voted on it. If civil unions grant gays the same rights as heterosexual couples, why are heterosexuals so determined to separate the institutions with a name? If you don't have a problem with gays expressing their love "publicly or privately," Mr. Zebrowski, why not just give them a marriage license?
