Welcome to the online edition of the 2007 Freshman Survival Guide.

Northwestern faculty turned away from full shuttles

The University's operation of the shuttle calls into question its mission. By stopping at intersections in Evanston like Chicago Ave and Davis, Chicago Ave and Greenleaf, Chicago Ave and Main Street, and in Chicago at Sheridan Road and Loyola Ave, the shuttle is clearly serving as a commuter transportation system.
Ultimately Northwestern needs to join the U-Pass program so that students can have unlimited rides on the CTA system. As for faculty and staff the University should develop a program that subsidizes the cost of a monthly CTA and/or Metra pass for those who wish to use that as an option. These steps would go a long way in allowing the shuttle to fulfill its primary mission, but as long as the shuttles stop at non-campus intersections it cannot be surprising that students, faculty and staff will use it as a de facto free transportation option.
