Armed bank robbery causes lockdown in District 65 schools
Two armed men robbed Harris Bank at about noon Monday, Evanston Police said.
The men, one with a handgun, held up a teller at the bank, 2821 Central St., according to an Evanston Police Department press release. They demanded money, and the teller turned over an undetermined amount of cash. The men fled on foot.
Evanston School District 65 officials said they enacted a lockdown on all city schools. By 2:15 p.m., police said the threat had passed, and school officials lifted restrictions.
Police canvassed the surrounding area, but the two men were not found.
Evanston woman uses pepper spray to deter would-be assailant
A female Evanston resident foiled a robber by repelling him with pepper spray Dec. 27.
The man, who appeared to be in his 20s, followed the resident into her apartment building on the 900 block of Reba Place, according to Evanston Police.
When the woman refused to give him her purse, the man reached down to his waistband, claiming to have a gun. She then sprayed him in the face.
The man fled the building and was not found by police.
Car chase ends in firearm possession charges for two men
Two men armed with guns were involved in a car chase Dec. 26.
Jermain Gentile, 25, and Shaun McDonald, 33, followed a four-door Nissan along the 1400 block of Emerson Street because of a dispute, according to Evanston Police. Detectives found two loaded handguns in the pursuers' Mercury Mountaineer.
Both men were charged with firearm possession without proper identification and unlawful use of a firearm. McDonald was also charged with possession of a weapon by a felon. Both face court Wednesday in Skokie.
